If you have worked for one of Houston's energy, industrial, or corporate employers, you may have a pension. Near retirement, some plans offer a choice: take a lump sum, or take an annuity, meaning monthly payments for life.
It is one of the most permanent decisions in retirement planning. In many plans, once you elect monthly payments, you cannot change your mind. Check your plan's rules.
This article does not recommend either option. It offers questions to bring to the conversation. It is educational, not tax, investment, or insurance advice. Any annuity or other fixed insurance product is separate from and not offered through Commonwealth Financial Network®.
Monthly payments (an annuity form) provide income for life under the plan's terms. Married participants may be offered options that continue a portion to a surviving spouse.
A lump sum pays out the present value of the benefit. It may be eligible for rollover to an IRA, which can keep tax deferral. Rollovers have tradeoffs, including costs and loss of the plan's lifetime payment, so ask questions first.
Federal law generally requires that a married participant's pension be paid as a joint and survivor annuity unless the spouse consents in writing to another form. (U.S. Department of Labor)
This is a gift of protection, especially for widows. Talk about it together. If you have recently lost a spouse, our first 90 days checklist may help.
If a lump sum is paid to you directly instead of rolled over, the plan generally must withhold 20% for federal income tax. A direct rollover to an IRA avoids that withholding. (IRS)
Many private-sector defined benefit pensions are insured by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), up to legal limits. (PBGC)
There is no universal right answer. Some households value a dependable check. Others value flexibility or leaving a legacy. Both can be faithful. Our Houston retirement paycheck clarity page explains how we think about lifetime income, and you can learn how we serve Christian households in Houston.
